Electronic PDF versus scanned PDF

An electronic PDF may store letters and shapes as text and vectors. A scanned PDF stores a picture of each page. This converter renders the original pages as images inside a new PDF and applies the scan effect.

The output is a new document. It does not preserve the cryptographic validity of a digital signature in the original PDF. Keep the original signed file and check the recipient’s requirements before converting.

Prepare the file for conversion

Finish editing the source document first. Check that all pages, annotations and required marks are present. For Word documents with complex formatting or unusual fonts, exporting a PDF from Word first lets you verify the layout before processing.

Upload the PDF, choose colour mode and quality, then process it. If the recipient requires searchable text, use subscription OCR and review its result. PDF/A is an output option, but it does not replace checking the recipient’s format rules.

Review size and readability

Rendering text as images can increase file size. Try black and white for plain text or a lower quality setting when a upload limit applies, and confirm that small print remains readable.

Inspect the downloaded PDF before submitting it. A scan effect does not guarantee acceptance by an organisation or portal. Save the result promptly: download links are available for six hours.

Is the result still a PDF?
Yes. The new PDF contains rendered page images with a scanned appearance.
Will a digital signature remain valid?
The conversion creates a new PDF and does not preserve the original digital signature’s cryptographic validity. Keep the signed original.
Why is the scanned PDF larger?
Page images can use more space than text and vectors. Lower quality or black and white can reduce size; check readability after changing settings.
